The Library Learning Commons recently received a generous donation of 150 children’s books from Beth Johnson. Beth is an active member of the CSC community and a great supporter of the LLC. She has been a Foster Grandparent at the Child Development Center since 2011. Beth’s partner, Pam Newberg, is the Technical Services Librarian at the LLC.
Beth’s donation memorializes her sister Cathy Hall, who passed away this fall. Cathy was a dedicated and gifted educator who taught in suburban Chicagoland schools for 37 years. In her long and dedicated career, she taught K-4 at a variety of schools and developed curricula for a major textbook publisher.
Cathy, Beth, and their siblings are featured in the photograph (right). Beth (Wittenvrongel) Johnson and Jim Wittenvrongel are pictured in the front row, and Shelley Wittenvrongel and Cathy (Wittenvrongel) Hall are pictured in the back row.
Cathy excelled at supporting new and future teachers, and she actively mentored them. She encouraged one of her teacher’s aides to get a teaching degree while providing assistance throughout the process. Cathy and her husband, Jim, also helped numerous student teachers over the course of two decades, allowing the student teachers to live with them rent-free while they completed their student teaching requirements.
Beth thought a donation to the LLC’s Curriculum Collection would be a great way to honor Cathy’s legacy as a teacher and tremendous supporter of future teachers. These books are a great resource for CSC’s education students. Beth says of herself and her partner, “We love books, and we love teachers.”
The donation includes recipients of the following awards: the Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature, the NCTE Orbis Pictus Award for Outstanding Nonfiction for Children, the Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal, the Scott O’Dell Award for Historical Fiction, and the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award.
