From September 14 to December 20, 2016, a trial version of APA Style CENTRAL will be available for all CSC faculty, students, and staff. Faculty members in the Counseling, Psychological Sciences, and Social Work Departments saw it in action at the annual conference of the American Psychological Association (APA) this summer, and felt it would be a valuable tool for the CSC campus community. At the end of this trial, we will analyze usage and determine if it will be an ongoing service.
APA Style CENTRAL helps users develop their writing and professional research skills by providing advanced writing and content management tools. Designed to provide students and instructors mastery over APA formatting styles, APA Style CENTRAL provides authoritative instructional materials and links users to the APA Publication Manual. Features include over 60 brief formatting guides, 18 full-length tutorials, access to 17 APA reference books, and 8 different templates for research papers, as well as reference management tools and an extensive library of citations for reference verification. Users must register an APA Style CENTRAL account with a valid CSC email address for full access.
The LLC and TLC have collaborated to determine the best way for users to access this trial service. While some features of APA Style CENTRAL can be integrated into a Sakai lesson page, we do not endorse this action because the product is still in its initial development. Any pieces placed in Sakai are a small fraction of the materials available through the website. Therefore, we recommend that faculty direct students to access APA Style CENTRAL through the link provided on the library’s page to ensure students can access the full suite of services. APA Style CENTRAL can be found on the library’s “Find Resources” page under both the REFERENCE MATERIALS and SOCIAL SCIENCE JOURNALS and RESOURCES sections: http://csc.edu/library/databases/index.csc.
APA Style CENTRAL includes four different modules – Learn, Research, Write, and Publish. Students and faculty can access the Learn Module without creating an APA Style CENTRAL account. This section explains APA Style rules and gives lots of examples of correct citations. If a user wants to see sample reference citations, they would go to the Learn module, and select Go to Sample References under the Samples heading. There they can find how to cite resources from common sources like books to more obscure sources like Facebook status updates.
In order to utilize the tools provided in the Research, Write, and Publish Modules, users need to create an account. These modules allow for users to customize their own research and writing, hence necessitating a unique login. The Research module provides reference materials, as well as tools to assist students with developing, planning, tracking, and citing their research. The Write module offers a variety of templates for common publication types (literature reviews, case studies, methodological articles), as well as a general APA Style paper. The Publish module offers information on guidelines for submitting research to journals in the social and behavioral sciences.
